The liberal arts and humanities have never been the forte of the
formal education in Phystech. On the other hand, the Marxist-Leninist
abracadabra has not been that brutally enforced on the students. Extracurricularly,
among the most important things one might learn in Phystech were the lines
from Bertold Brecht voiced by Vysotsky

The burning of Sorokin's books by the Putinjugend drew my
attention to the author Vladimir Sorokin. Here is a
link to Sorokin's novel (sic!) The
Norm that vividly describes the life in the Soviet
Union when folks were discussing superior matters and living their daily
lives while chewing on The Norm - the stuff V. Voinovich
called "the secondary product" in his Moscow
2042. The Norm brings reminiscences of F. Tyutchev, I.
Tourguenev, etc. together with the odour of The Norm
ubiquitous in the Soviet Life.
Humor and flexible attitude have always helped Phystech students. |
